We arrived in Ulan Ude at silly o'clock in the morning and went straight to our homestay where we were given porridge with rice for breakfast. After some relaxation time we went on a little trip to a little monastery outside the city. It was in a peaceful location surrounded by hills and little villages. We looked around at the statues and colourful wall hangings, being careful to walk around clockwise, then headed to a Buryat village where we had lunch with one of the ladies who lived there. She gave us dumplings and soup and some doughnut-like things with jam. After lunch we tried on some Buryat clothes and had a go at some archery before going back into town to look at the world's largest Lenin head, where we posed for silly photos (see pictures).
The following day we went to a larger monastery called the Ivolsky Datsan where we again looked at the statues and observed the monks wandering around. There were also some very cute little puppies! After lunch we went to a town where the Old Believers live. They are extreme Russian orthodox and do not believe in modern machinery, like the Amish. We visited a church and said hello to the long-bearded priest, and then returned to the city. The next day we left for Ulanbaatar in Mongolia.
