Yungang Grottos
Entry 21 of 32 | show all | print this entry |
Asked what were the top three places that we have visited, everyone has included the Yungang Grottos, mostly as number 1. As the Guide book says : " Confronted and dwarfed by a 17 metre high Buddha.....gold face shining softly in half light is an awesome, humbling experience......the other wordly appearance is helped by blue hair and ruby red lips. " We walked aong by the caves which contain over 50 000 Buddhist statues, carved in 460-494 AD and stretch 1 kilometre along a ridge. The infuences of the nationality of some of the workmen employed at the time can be seen....Persian, Greek and Indian. Some statues are well preseved, others have been battered by the elements, but all are appealing. The shere size and quantity of them is overwhelming, but in some ways the site is very simple. We had had to travel considerably further north to visit these last 2 places but the long journey had been well worth it.
