It took me a while to realise that the essence of a Chinese garden is a serious art form. The designer works with rock, water, vegetation, trees, buildings. The aim is to produce a sense of harmony, balance, proportion and variety, which the Chinese seek in life. The garden is to be enjoyed alone or in the company of friends. During the evening we watched a performance in The Master of Nets garden. With the garden as the essential feature, created in 1140 and restored in 1770,there was singing, dancing, the playing of traditional instruments, the acting out of little scenes, dressed in Chinese costume : all very unusual for us Following day was for The Humble Administratior's Garden. Rather full of visitors, I was taken by the names : Halls named after bamboo, lotus breezes, elegance, green ripple, seclusion Pavilions : listening to the sound of rain, think deep and aim high, Mountain in view tower and so it goes on. We visited traditional homes with furniture dating back many centuries. Glimpses through lattice work,, terraces, covered walkways, moongates, reflections in water create cunning perspectives, and add to the illusions. Most things, it seems are symbolic: pine trees and crane for long life and mandarin ducks for married bliss. The "Venice" of China is an hour's boat ride from Shanghai and a delightfully relaxing area.
