visit to Durbar Square
Entry 2 of 32 | show all | print this entry |
Today is a Festival so I headed off down to the main square with a very friendly couple who suggested that I should join them. Just as well as this part of the city is a labyrinth of tiny streets, heaving with all types of small vehicle which take no notice of pedestrians. Trying to orientate oneself is also a challenge, amongst this maze of old, cluttered alleyways. Durbar Square is the ancient centre where the Palace, and many shrines are situated. It was bustling with local people, selling everything imaginable from live chickens, goats, ducks, all sorts of vegetables, household equipment, materials, clothes, spices, hot food : we accepted the offer of a young man to guide us round. He explained the significance of the Shrines and Temples, customs and traditions. For example there is the Temple of the living Goddess. He told us that a young girl is chosen to live in the Temple. (More of that later.) We climbed up to the top floor of a restaurant where we watched the Procession...cosisting of bands of an official nature, Police, Army etc playing Nepalese music and some men in colorful religious robes. Children were flying kites, and from our vantage point we could see the rooftops of Katmandu and had a wonderful view of the Himalayas.
