Aye Kuranda
Entry 82 of 113 | show all | print this entry |
After taking the average of several conflicting weather forecasts we decided to delay our planned trip out to The Great Barrier Reef until the following day. Instead, Heather decided we should go to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. I was a bit sceptical, but I found out they let you have a go at spear throwing so I decided to play along.
As it turned out the park was really good. In addition to the spear throwing (I did OK for distance, but unless there were any birds hiding in the trees along side the throwing area I would have gone hungry!) we also tried our hand at boomerang throwing. The less said about that the better. And didgeridoo playing, with similar results to our boomerang throwing! Non-hands on attractions at the park included creation, history and dance theatres. These provided an interesting way to learn about Aboriginal culture and history, including the impact that European settlers had on their way of life. Apart from the stories from our Fraser Island guide, this is one side of Australian life that we hadn't found out much about until now.
In the afternoon we took the Skyrail, a 7.5km cable car across tropical rainforest, to a town called Kuranda. The journey took about 1.5 hours after we'd walked around the boardwalks through the forest at the two stops on the way. Floating over the forest was great. We've seen a lot of rainforest on this trip, but none from directly above.
Kuranda is even more 'designed for tourists' than central Cairns. So much so, that once the cable car and scenic railway back to Cairns had stopped running at about 3:30, the whole town seemed to shut down. Even the coffee shop that we did find open started clearing up around us before 4pm.
We avoided the hoards, well we'd missed the last train anyway, and took the minibus back to Cairns with the locals.
Today's big thing: Captain Cook.
