The guy that ran the hostel we were staying at offered to take us for a windsurfing lesson at nearby Lake Ainsworth. Even though we'd decided that surfing looked too difficult we somehow thought that we could learn to windsurf in an afternoon, so we took him up on the kind offer.
After a brief on land demonstration of what we should be doing, assuming we could even stand up on the board, we were left to our own devices. Standing up was actually quite easy. Standing up whilst holding onto the sail as the wind gusted into it was more difficult. I was pretty pleased to be able to be able to stay upright well enough to cross the lake a couple of times and avoid the various swimmers and people in canoes -- this was probably more through luck than anything else since I never really mastered steering at all! Heather mastered standing up & holding on for dear life for about 5 seconds. The lake contains tea tree extracts which at least meant that each time we fell off it was good for our skin and hair!
