Due to its location right next to the Pacific Highway we felt we had to stop at the Big Banana. We'd heard about this bizarre tourist trap built around a banana plantation and to be honest it was a bit disappointing. The Banana itself isn't actually that big. OK, so it does meet the rules for Australia's 'Big Things' which are:
1) They must be artificial. 2) They must be larger than the real thing.
Also, it was the original Big Thing of which there are now several 100 spread across the country. For some reason, we'd thought that the Banana's attractions (ice rink, ski slope, banana themed cafe) were actually inside the fibre glass structure. As it is there is simply a small banana growing exhibition in the Banana and even the gift shop is located elsewhere.
Having dragged ourselves away from the Banana cafe we headed for Yamba. We had had a very kind offer of staying at a beach house owned by a family we met on our Borneo tour.
