Monkeys and Volleyball
Entry 53 of 113 | show all | print this entry |
We packed up camp early and headed up stream in search of wildlife. Cruising through the early morning mist was very atmospheric and the trees that lined the banked were teaming with monkeys -- proboscis, languars and macaques. We also saw a water monitor and a crocodile (rather close to the area where the local people bathed in the river) but failed to find any orangutans, only seeing their nests.
Once we had had breakfast at the MESCOT centre we bathed in the local style in the river, which despite being brown provided welcome refreshment after a hot night in the jungle.
That afternoon we were invited to play volleyball with some of the local people and MESCOT staff. Although I've never played before, I really enjoyed it -- especially jumping up at the net to smash the ball over. My time spent playing basketball definatley helped with that.
In the evening, Heather and I were taken to the house of our host family for the night. We were asked if we would like fish and crab for dinner, which we thought would be fine. When it was presented to us, the crabs were still in their shells, with no tools with which to remove them and the fish in question was cuttlefish (look it up!). We were initially disappointed that the family didn't dine with us, but it was probably a good thing given our pathetic attempts to extract the meat from the crabs and Heather's face as she chewed (and chewed) the cuttlefish. The homestay was certainly an experience, albeit more culinary than cultural!
We joked that what we hadn't finished would be served up for breakfast...

Just a little walk, then (reply) Oct 27, 2006 10:39 EST by rdoogan
Sounds like the walk up the mountain was well worth it, just remember the sunrise and nothing else! Really doesn't surprise me that after a leg-breaking walk up (and down) a mountain, Andy considered it necessary to go for a little stroll.
I hope all this bathing in rivers doesn't travel back with you, would be quite odd seeing Andy splashing around in the Kennet.

(shudders) (reply) Oct 27, 2006 09:13 EST by rosamund
I've recently had computer problems, so just caught up with all your news. I'm a bit dubious about the night time strolls through the jungle to visit the local spiders...
