Typhoon aftermath

During the night we could see the wind and rain howling outside and in the morning we opened our bedroom door to find a bucket collecting drips in the hallway - one of many around the hotel. There was no electricity. Outside the typhoon was still pretty powerful and we could see branches and other rubbish floating down the road. As we were supposed to get breakfast at a sister hotel down the road, we just assumed we would go without today. However, we were amazed to see that the hotel staff were running round to bring back food for us. Spicy noodle soup for breakfast isn't my first choice - but we were pleased to eat anything (as we hadn't eaten he night before either, as all the restaurants had battened down the hatches early).
When the storm had calmed down a few hours later, we went for a walk around town. It was an incredible sight - trees down, power cables strewn across the road, lampposts bent over. Fortunately there didn't see to be too much damage to buildings, but when we got to the old part of town we saw that the river had burst its banks and there was more damage here. The locals were obviously all busy trying to sort things out while the tourists looked on. BBC news >> http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5394626.stm

Scotland's a bit breezy too (reply) Oct 5, 2006 08:54 EST by gcasbolt
I'm working near kilmarnock on the west coast of scotland for a few days at the moment. It was nice for the fist couple of days but it's rained quite hard since.
Still seem to have electricity and running water though so not quite Typhoon scale :-)
Glad to hear you're still safe and sound. I'd be interested to know a bit more about the history in that part of the world so keep t... show all
