Leeches and Gibbons!

Today we took a trip into Khao Yai national park. Our guide was really enthusiastic and got more excited than we did when he spotted a great hornbill or gibbon high up in the trees. He had a powerful telescope which was great, it was really hard to even see the hornbills with the naked eye.
We saw many animals and birds including gibbons, macaques, great hornbills, water monitors (enormous lizards), a large Indian civet, giant black squirrels and a porcupine. Unfortunately, despite a lot of looking, we didn't see any wild elephants. There are also about 10 tigers in the park but we didn't see any of those -- not surprising really considering our guide, who spends most days in the park, has never seen one. Before we started walking through the jungle we were given leech socks (tightly woven cotton socks that go inside your boots and tie up at the tops). Sure enough, after a couple of minutes our boots had several of the little blood suckers attached to them. We tried our best to flick them off as we spotted them, but it was hard to do that and watch the gibbons flying from tree to tree above us. Thankfully when we removed our boots at the end of the walk the socks had done their job and despite the odd leech in our boots it wasn't the bloody mess we were worried we would find.
