Overnight to Chiang Mai
Entry 16 of 113 | show all | print this entry |
Took the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. It wasn't quite as posh as the European sleeper trains, but was a bit more spacious having only double rather than triple decker bunks. The journey took 15 hours, but thankfully we slept for a lot of the time.
There was a huge storm part way up the country -- at about 6 in the morning. It was quite surreal being half asleep standing by the wide open door whilst the wind and rain blew in. I think the door may have actually been missing altogether and I didn't fancy reaching outside the train to close it. We didn't know until we got here, but just days earlier the journey wouldn't have been possible (at least by train) due to flooding. Apparently a train got washed off the line we travelled on!
