Savannah - Georgia - USA
We spent a couple of days visiting Savannah, a charming City of quaint shops and restaurants nestled beneath a canopy of Live Oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. Savannah also features stunning examples of Federal, Italianate, Georgian and Victorian architecture along with 22 very leafy squares, which formed part of the original city plan when Savannah was founded in 1733.
These squares serve as the heart and soul of downtown Savannah and have been widely praised for their beauty. We spent most of the day trekking around town, no mean feat in a very humid 99 deg F. Luckily most of the town is flat and it is truly a beautiful place, one we had always wanted to visit and were not disappointed
Savannah also has a River which is reached by cobbled lanes descending sharply from the upper town level down to the river. This strip is lined by old warehouses which accommodate many shops and restaurants. On the wharf there are several southern steam boats which take visitors up and down the waterways. We used the smaller ferry boats which ply the waters for free! There are several stores with live demo's making the famous Pecan Pralines, these are delicious, very similar to our English fudge but they have heaps of pecans.
Drive 15 miles across the marsh islands known as the low lands and you come to Tybee Island. This is Savannahs beach area. White sandy beaches are washed by the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach was packed with swimmers and surfers. We took a walk along the wooden pier and watched the fishermen patiently watching their lines, not sure what they were trying to catch but they had huge hooks on their lines. Too hot and humid on the beach for us though! If the air conditioning ever fails I think we'll die
