Friday 6th July
Well, it had to happen, a cock-up in the arrangements! all smooth thru africa and the North Island of NZ and then when i tried to book the Kiwi Experience bus i was told it did not leave on a thursday and i would have to wait till Friday, therefore not having enough days left to complete the package i have paid for brfore the flight on Friday 13th (aaaaggghhh)So i tried to change the flight (no) tried the train (no)refund on the trip and do it myself (no) so i settled for a $70 (25 quid) bus journey to here Franz Josef where i can catch the previous days bus up and be back on track. I have a Heli-hike booked tomorrow ($210) and then a search for Sky tv to watch the Lions beat the wallabies in the second test. Then it is on the Kiwi Experience bus to Wanaka, and on to Queenstown for two days skiing (sorry Carol) and back to Christchurch. The drive to Franz Josef was everything people told me it would be and more the mountains capped with snow and the icicles all over the place made it a great spectacle. The Heli-hike has been described in equally glowing terms by friends from Manchester who have done it, and I can't wait. I keep saying the photo's will be here soon but i can't find a suitable e-mail cafe to set it all up, so if anyone knows a good one in Auckland (Julie, Rich, Mone??) let me know and i will let you all see them.

Sat. 7th July
Well I have just returned from the Heli-hike and it was amazing. we were given talons (spikes for our boots) and taken in the Helicopter to the start point. The ice was, we were told up to 300m thick in places but imagine walking on an ice rink and you will realise how scard we were. The feeling is weird as you move through the gaps, some of which meant you twisting into weird positions to get through. The guide seemed a bit hesitant at times about some of the crevises (sp?) we had to negotiate, but after a blast with his pickaxe we were soon of again. The site of some of the formations of ice made it great day and worth the $210
more later of skiing tomorrow c ya
