Flag of French Polynesia  ,
Wednesday, November 24, 2004

After planes trains and automobiles deep into the Pacific, we landed by seaplane on Mo'orea, an idyllic little island a 10 minute plane ride from Tahiti, a South Pacific paradise of lagoons and sand-banks (or 'motu'). We were lucky enough to get upgraded to a stunning bungalow, built off a long dock over the sea and right on the reef, with glass floors so you could see the coral and fish swimming beneath your feet!
This is probably as close to paradise as it gets - blindingly white beaches, coral reefs, swaying palm trees etc. We saw a Polynesian dance show performed by locals with full flower and grass skirt regalia, providing the perfect postcard backdrop for the French and American honeymooners who keep the resorts in business.
For five days we did very little apart from swim, kayak, eat gorgeous French food, and gawp at fluorescent sunsets. Like our own personal episode of Fantasy Island, we half expected Ricardo Montalban to appear out of the bushes and summon Tattoo to get us a cocktail!
When we did leave, it was via the capital of Tahiti, Papa'ete, where we had carpaccio at a surreal little place called Dao, serenaded by a Polynesian band who performed Sting songs in a Vietnamese restaurant. We've now crossed the international date line and have arrived in Auckland one day older but with tans to die for..
