All week the weather's not been too bad here, when we've been indoors trying to get a grasp on that weird and unnecessarily complicated language that they use here for some reason. So when the weekend finally comes around it is welcomed by a thunderstorm. Nice.

Due to these climatic constraints today was another low key day in Montevideo. As a small victory, however, today was the uruguayan 'dia de patrimonio' which, as far as i can see, is just an excuse to boast about how good the country is for no particular reason. What it also meant though, and infinately more relevant to us shallow foreigners, was that all the museums, court buildings etc etc would be open all day and all 'gratis' (thats free by the way in english - 2 weeks worth of spanish right there).

We decided that our public building of choice would be the palacio legislativo, which is basically their houses of parliament. It didnt disappoint; with floor to ceiling marble everywhere, intricate woodwork and all round cracking architecture the place gets my vote. We were free to wonder about the place, including the equivalent of the house of lords and commons chambers. It certainly shows that Uruguay had a fair amount of money in its early years to afford a building like that. Although for all you history buffs out there the 'early years' arent actually that early - the country has only been around about 180 years. A mere pup in historical terms.

We then contrasted this piece of history with a visit to a shopping mall (the weather was still bad). This had the opposite effect; crowded, modern bland architecture and although it was massive it didnt seem to have anything that we wanted. We did by some more milk though that we needed, so thats alright then.
