Driving through the dessert at the tail end of a 13 hour bus journey, we watched the sun go down into the sand. This was an awesome experience, very Jim Morrison.
Then out of nothing sprang about a billion million lights all flashing away gaudy and blinding. Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas Nevada! Where the lecky bill is out of this world and the streets are full of hustlers and posers all looking for a good time or chasing a buck or two.
We stayed in the Riviera hotel which seems to be one of the older ones at the tail end of the strip. However, it had recently been renovated and had a good price tag compared to some of the flashier ones. It was complete with a casino, comedy house, theatre, wedding chapel, shopping centre, magic shop, pool, 4 restaurants and a tattoo parlour - all the essentials. It sounds ridiculous but the other hotels have full malls, theme parks complete with rollercoasters, night clubs, aquariums, golf courses - the works. Its all part of the american dream after all.
Walking down the strip, there are a million lights, advertisements, guys handing out flash cards (literally - its all Girls Girls Girls!), every other casino has some kind of deal to draw you in and every hotel is a city in itself. Its entertainment at its most vulgar. Its the only place I have ever visited in the world where it seems you can get anything you want at any minute of the day. Just walking up the street slurping on our yard of frozen margarita in novelty glasses, we saw a midget elvis shaking his pelvis in the street and a rap-off eight mile style which was being filmed..awesome.
The best part of our time on the strip was going to see the Cirque de Soleil creation - Love, the Beatles - a fantastic show of music, dance, acrobatics, outlandish costumes and incredible effects. We both loved it!
If you have money and want to play, then this is the place for you. I think Andy enjoyed it more than I did but Im glad of the chance to see it, even if it does tug at the guilt strings just being there amongst the sheer greed and abundance of it all.
