Very early on Monday morning we pulled in to the dock at Piraeus. A fleet of Mercedes Benz limousines was impatiently waiting to take us to the Athens airport so the Canada-bound foursome said a hurried goodbye to those heading for Australia and clambered into the taxis. If the ride from the airport to Athens had been harrowing the return journey was flat out scary. In an effort to stay ahead of rush hour traffic our drivers took obscure and indirect routes. This added distance to the journey and so the time had to be made up with speed. At several points along the way I observed the speedometer to be reading 175 kilometers per hour as we careened past plebeian commuters. I suggested to the driver that he might as well just take us all the way over to Toronto because we would probably get there more quickly in the taxi than in the airplane.

And so our Greek adventure was over. We saw many memorable sights, had our appetite for knowledge of emerging and vanishing cultures strongly whetted and shared good times with people whose company we enjoy. A good deal for a keen shopper.
