Saturday we set off though the olive groves for Spain and, by some extraordinary means, found our villa on top of a mountain near, I am told, a place called Antequera (thing is, I was driving the vehicle). There were olive groves rampant. It was very charming. We enjoyed a meal of tapas in a nearby town. The farm dogs barked all night.
On Sunday we went through the olive groves to Ronda and were duly amazed and went home to dinner in our village of La Joya, at the only bar in that town. Had the best time of the whole trip. Ate and drank far too much and the bill was €36. I gave the man €50 and we sloshed back to the villa where the farm dogs barked all night.
Monday we had a date at the Al Hambra castle in Grenada, which was truly stunning. We spent the night at our villa listening to the dogs barking through the olive groves.
On Tuesday I set off first thing for the main hotel to inform them of our views on barking dogs. I advised the hostess that, in addition to our group being in an overdrawn sleep-dept position, one of our number was quite ill from exhaustion. I suggested that, out of concern for her, we would remain at the villa and rest for one more night, but would leave on Wednesday, a day early, and would like a refund for the unused day. The owner was reluctant to give a refund, suggesting that since it was "the country" (there were many olive groves) we should have been prepared for animal noises. While she was still expounding on this notion I noticed a posting saying that the villa we were renting for €1000 for 5 nights normally rents for €735 per week. When she realized that I knew that she knew that I knew, she offered to provide a courtesy refund for the one day so there would be no hard feelings.
We spent the rest of that day roaming the streets of Antequera seeking futilely for something of the remotest interest. That night it rained, so the dogs had the evening off and we were able to catch a few winks.
