What a view driving into La Paz!

It's an absolutely enormous city in a massive valley surrounded by the Andes mountains, yes they're mine :-)

La Paz isn't a very well-off place at all. They are some nice areas in the city, that we saw, but like Lima, a lot of poverty. The main Plaza was beautiful, really Spanish-colonial looking. The military marched out of the Presidential Palace at 6pm to take down the national and regional flags in the Plaza, that was some sight, and a sight we just happened to be there for. One of the soldiers will definitely have gotten a ticking-off though, he couldnt stop smiling to himself, it looked like he was going to burst out laughing. We'd only 1 night in La Paz, and hardly any sleep - I (Andy) stupidly asked for a room at the front of the hotel. There was a concert at the university just down the road, and it went on until about 1am. The pan-pipes are still playing in my head. Our flight to Santiago was at 6am, so wed to be up at 3.30am, to get to the airport in time etc - we were both shattered. However, we would've liked to have spent a bit more time in La Paz, 1 night wasn't anywhere near enough. But we're doing all this in 4 months - sometimes it feels like were trying to beat Phileas Fogg.

Great adventure, just a bit tiring sometimes - well worth it though! Better to do it when we have the energy, eh!?
