We then visited the nearby Hokitika Glass Studio where we watched glass blowers at work making candlestick holders and other ornaments, their favourite being small penguins!
We then drove down the coast stopping off at Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. The limetone rocks at Dolomite Point have formed into what looks like stacks of thin pancakes, through a layering and weathering process known as stylobedding. We were lucky to be visiting at high tide and therefore were able to experience the impressive geyser like blowholes caused by water surging into the caverns below the rocks. The 15min loop walk from the road takes you around the rocks and blowholes and there is the usual souvenir shop and café for us tourists. From here we continued onto Franz Josef village where we booked a glacier hike for the following day. That night we parked up at a DOC (Dept of Conservation) campsite beside Lake Mapourika.
