When I left Australia for Europe in February 2004 we needed a visa to get in here so it wasn't even on the radar. Little did I know at the time that as of April that year they opened the doors and it was a matter of turning up and you were let in...doh!
So here we are 8 years later and we have finally made it. First stop is Ceske Budejovice for three days.
We were catching the train from Vienna to Ceske Budejovice and once on the platform an elderly gentleman must have thought we were lost and checked our tickets for us. He suggested we catch the train with him one station away so we could board at the first stop and have plenty of time to get our seats and store our bags
Why not we thought so followed him on to the train. Upon arrival at the next station he showed us the train we needed to get, he laughed at us in our thongs, we laughed at him telling us that when Austrians travel abroad they always get mistaken for Australians, he didn't get my joke about our thongs being Japanese safety boots and so we parted company and boarded the train for the Czech Republic.
We arrived around 2pm and walked the 15 minutes from the train station to the apartment where we got the key and were met with the best accommodation we've had on the trip thus far. It is also one of the cheapest so certainly an added bonus.
We ventured out to the main square and did some grocery/beer shopping for our 3 night stay before returning to the apartment to work out the plan for tomorrow's trip to Ceske Krumlov.
Once we had that sorted we headed to Masné Krámy for some beers and dinner. All reviews had suggested it as "the" place to eat whilst here and it certainly didn't disappoint.
Upon arrival they told us there were no free tables available, even to sit and have one beer. We must have given our best sad faces as they magically found the last remaining unbooked table in the restaurant so we could enjoy both some beers and what was to be one of the greatest meals we have ever eaten.
We started with the krausened Budvar Lager which was fresh from one of the fermentation tanks and soooo tasty before we ordered our entrees and mains.
The entrees came out quick smart and were so huge we wondered if we'd even be able to get through the mains.
The waiter was straight to us once the beers were finished to see if we wanted another (silly question really) and so the next round came.
A band arrived and set up next to us and proceeded to belt out some (I assume) traditional Czech tunes, certainly the locals were digging their unique brand of good vibe music and we were getting into the groove too.
Our mains arrived and we both agreed the food was without a doubt the best we've had on our trip thus far.
A few more beers and we decided we had better call it a night given we have an early start tomorrow for our trip to Ceske Krumlov. For less than $40 we each had an entree and main meal plus 4x 500ml Budvars each. Crazy value for money so we ensured our waiter received a healthy tip for his attentive service.
A day trip to Ceske Krumlov awaits tomorrow and it is meant to rain though we are hoping it blows over but regardless I am sure we'll make the most of it.
