Where I stayed
So Hotel - In luxury
We have really enjoyed having a tv and bathroom (oh luxury) the last few days in particular because of the events in Myanmar with the release of Aung San Suu Kyi we have at times been very emotional watching the footage and reading the press and reports and quotes from world leaders. It will be great to see what happens over the next few days and weeks. At the end of the day I just can't see how a military dictatorship now so heavily backed by the chinese need for oil, gas and timber will allow market forces of an open and free Myanmar can be overthrown through pacifistic protests. The spend on the military is now so huge that peaceful protests will not get very far and will be dealt with in a similar way as the slaughter of the monks not too many years ago. Erica edit : Predictably despite most other nations reporting the jubulant news of 'The Lady's' release China have taken a different stance and are clearly worried about what implications her release will have for the 'special relationship' that they share with Myanmar - China has A LOT to answer to and it is so, so sad that all this comes down to money.
New Zealand has been great and we have loved almost every minute of it. I think that a nurse somewhere in Hong kong needs to increase Stevie R's dosage as after all the things and all the photo's of this magical country he leaves us a comment saying how boring it is. Keep on taking those tablets Steve you will be ok but have to accept New Zealand is far from dull. It is an absolutely stunningly beautiful country with a wealth of natural charm. We have forgotten the amount of times that we have turned a corner on a road and our jaws have dropped the scenery has been that amazing or how special the nature has been
on the tv was a good nature documentary about the decline in numbers of sharks due to the culling of sharks simply to remove three fins for the chinese soup market, the rest of the carcus is simply thrown back overboard into the sea. What a waste. Sorry it's the 'C' word again.
The So hotel has been a great way for us to leave New Zealand after 10 weeks in a van with no water, electricity etc to be able to end in a lovely place in such a relaxed manner has been great. We can't say enough about the place really it has given us the perfect end to an amazing trip - from skydiving to swimming with dolphins we will never forget it.
