Melbourne Big 4

As normal we set off early but 5am was a bit too early for the Lady. She wanted to call her mum for a prearranged call as the connection last night was quite frankly turd. Unfortunately she was on another call and we sat for an hour before packing it in as I was trying to make the AFL final in Melbourne and hopefully get there in time to try and bag some tickets outside the ground. The drive was fairly uneventful be we finished James Caan's 10 hour autobiography at last which hypnotically sent you to sleep through repeating the same thing over and over. We finished the journey with a proper rave up (screaming to songs on the Ipod) and arrived in Melbourne with only an hour to spare before kick off.... so much for scouting for tickets. We settled at a Big 4 caravan park which was quite frankly extortion at $40 but without any choice we were forced to plump for it for a night. We got a tram into town to try and find somewhere to watch Australia’s big sporting celebration and perhaps more importantly somewhere to stay.

We headed straight for the main square, Federation Square, to find the game had already kicked off but with thousands of spectators was already in full swing. As daft as it sounds this was our first beer out since we met Sonja and Col almost three weeks ago. A real extravagance however stalking through the crowds of Collingwood and St Kilda supporters I managed to find a guy with strange accent who turned out to be from Warrington. We straight away swapped details and we hope we have free accommodation tomorrow. The game was truly thrilling although Collingwood took several big leads it ended in a tie. We waited for extra time with much anticipation only to find there wasn’t any only a replay when we leave for New Zealand. We spent a fortune but after living on a few dollars a day on food for the past few weeks thought we had earned it, and I love a bit of live sport. It was odd though the coppers were picking up anyone even slightly drunk and arresting them, imagine that on FA Cup final day in the UK one in four people would have to be a police officer to arrest the other 3 in 4 who were drunk.

After the game we spent an hour at an internet cafe where I’m sure the guy obtained my credit card details when i had to book a hostel (Please let me know if I get any odd transactions!!). Erica rang her Mum for an hour or so and we soon headed back on the tram to the suburbs. Well Melbourne had defiantly been one of the Lady’s favourite spots in Oz, it is so cosmopolitan and its fashion so unique with tattoos across womens chests, shaved backs of heads (on women) and multiple piercing being the norm. It is definitely a place Erica would consider living and perhaps me too, but I guarantee one thing Mike and Carleen would love it!!!!

We headed back for the park and got off the tram halfway deciding to go to a bar, unfortunately I was asked "just how much have you had to drink", “about 4 pints”, “stand here in front of me and..... in fact we don’t let people in with thongs anyway” Erica was furious as for once I wasn’t plastered and although looking like a tramp should have suited any criteria to get into an Aussie Bar. Mind you we did see a classic punch up outside one bar where a girl started smacking her boyfriend in the face with left, right, left, right screaming something very rude at him.

We finished the evening getting lost in Melbourne’s conurbations before cooking steaks (reduced by 50%) with tinned peas and fried onions and tomatoes. By the time I eventually got the blog finished it was 00:30.  I nipped to the loo and somehow believe it or not I managed to get lost, it appeared in the dark I had taken a wrong road to start with and couldn’t find my way to the loo’s at all, Erica was somewhat amused.... although she obviously didn’t find out till the next morning she had been enjoying sleeping while I wrote the bastard blog. Let’s see what tomorrow brings in Bohemian Melbourne.

Glad to see you're keeping up with the local sporting events - strangely looks like centre of Manchester after a united win ;-)!!!!! See the beard's back!!! xxx

we like shaved heads and piercing as much as the next people but doubt that being prevented from accessing a bar after 4 pints would equate to a satisfactory standard of living for the leeno/sharks"1 pint after work" brigade!

sounds like a fine city and a great day, thoughg ;)
