I woke to the bite of another large mosquito and the smell of sweat in the air. I decided to start the engine get the aircon going and try and just get another half hour sleep. I was a little surprised to say the least when I found the battery to be completely flat. I had to wake up the lady who had only managed to get a uninterrupted 8 hours sleep. I found out it was 5:30 in the morning and she wasn't best pleased. I sat awake waiting for the other early risers on the campsite. It was sitting in the front seat I realised we did everything wrong. Whilst Oz appears to be a relatively safe place I didn’t expect every other car caravan and camper van to have every window, door and boot open. I suspect people are probably drinking deet to be able to do this but I guess that we have been so heavily on Malaria wtcih we kind of forgot it isn’t an issue for a mozzie to bite you, maybe a bit of dengue fever about but I guess that is about it. We got on the road and headed for a coffee at McDonalds our free internet cafe. We decided we had cocked up the timing a little as it was too early to ring Erica’s mum and Dad as she has only managed to leave a message on the answer phone wishing her dad a happy birthday. Anyway Happy Birthday again Ian.

We restocked on the things we realised we should have bought yesterday, picked up some $6 camping chairs with a back and arm rests amongst a few other bits and bobs. We then stopped off for a good while at the amazing Josephine falls with some great swimming areas and natural slides made out of the weathered stone. We had lunch / brunch here, I delighted myself with the nutritious and healthy BBQ sauce sandwich i.e. two slices of bread with BBQ sauce in between while the Lady will not lower herself to such levels she had and made me a cheese and pickled onion butty. I think I have already gained a few of my lost KG back since leaving Asia.

We then drove down to a place called Ella Beach via Flying Fish point, the area we were trying to get to was closed so we made do with a quick walk on the beach. Although we had said goodbye to Sonja and Col only the day before we had already received an E-mail to say they had decided to head south and hired a caravan at a place called Etty Beach. It was a dreamlike spot and we called in for about an hour, playing a little frisby. We stuck to our cost cutting guns and headed off with about 45 minutes before dark to find a truckers lay by a bit further down the coast. After another final round of goobyes we left knowing we are not supposed to drive our van in the dark and I still couldn’t figure out when or if my lights were on full beam or not. Erica’s map reading skills will improve over time no doubt, maybe a bit like her Geography has come on no end over the last six months. Well she announced she found a place with showers were you could free camp if you bought something from the shop, after 5 minutes she announced we were nearly there it was just around the corner. About 30 minutes later after passing another 4 free camping spots and other campers hid in lay byes behind signs and things we found our spot. It was dark and after an initial up and down and questioning his wife the guy announced he didn’t normally let backpackers camp there but we looked respectable (well that wasn’t his exact word maybe it was older than the average backpacker but you get the drift). We bought some more tinned produce and some onions and headed into his field to find we were the only other people there. As I put tea on we found we were also on the side of a train track. With the bright stars out again we sat and had a few wines with our delightful, chorizo sausage, wollies value pasta sauce and excitingly an onion. Erica edit: It’s interesting how the word sauté has snuck back in to our vocabulary.  After a quick shower we opened the windows of the van and between the noise of the traffic from the land trains we drifted off to a much cooler sleep.
