Today was a day for getting my act together. I did very boring and normal things, getting laundry done, getting a hair cut (which included a neck and back massage) and buying gifts to be sent back home.

I keep meeting people who are new to KL and so I can give them advice on where to go and how to get there. Most are travelers like myself and are eager to chat and swap stories. Others are here for work, or long term traveling, or are waiting for something. One of the guys in my dorm was beaten up in Bangkok and had all his money stolen from him. He was able to hitch hike from Bangkok to KL and the backpackers gave him credit so that he could stay for free until he gets some money today. It reminded me that not all things can go well and to be a bit more cautious when travelling. So far, I never felt threatened or worried about where I am, or how I am talking to. But I haven't got to Thailand yet, and there are worse places to be than Thailand.

Luckily violent crime against tourists is very rare and the guy that was beaten up had been living in South East Asia for 16years. This was the first time that anything like that had happened to him. Also, you can't live in fear of where you are heading because you know someone who has had a bad experience, or change your plans because a fellow traveller didn't like somewhere. Another guy in my dorm wouldn't go to Sumatra because it is a high malarial region. Bonkers! If you take the proper precautions (anti-malarial tablets, mosquito repellent, mosquito nets, etc), you should be able to travel anywhere in the world without fear of getting ill.
