I was here during the Golden Week, which is a holiday week for everyone in China. So you basically have to share every sightseeing place with millions of Chinese people. It's hard to estimate but some say there are over half a billion Chinese people on the road that week. It's completely crazy. There's serious talks about changing the holiday schedule in China so that not everyone has their holiday week at the same time. It puts such a tremendous pressure on the touristic infrastructures which are already struggling to keep up in a normal week.
Things you're likely to see if you come to China:
- Ten year old kids smoking cigarettes
- People spitting their guts out everywhere, and yes, including inside the bus. They think nothing of it.
- People checking of the 100 and 50 Yuan bill you're handing them is counterfeited or not. China is at grip with such a huge fake money problem. Every bank and most businesses have a bill validating machine in which all the higher denomination bank notes are systematically run through. One quickly get used to it but it's very strange at first to have everyone scrutinizing your bank notes every time you pay for something.
