It was a very long drive to Eger. The motorway wasn't finished so we had to take small roads for a portion of the trip and then we got stuck behind a bad accident (a medivac helicopter had to come). It was getting dark by the time we arrived and we spent a frustrating 30 minutes looking for our hotel. Finally found it, had a quick dinner and went to bed.

Our hotel was right off the square and in the shadow of the Eger Castle. So in the morning we exlored the square a little bit. Eger is the Alamo of Hungary, where Dobo Istvan made a brave stand against the Turks. There are 2 statues in the square commemorating this. One features Dobo Istvan with two villagers (the woman is preparing to pour a pot of boiling water on the invaders). The second is a Hungarian fending off two Turks. It's a little bit of a contrast in feeling from yesterday's friendship memorial.

Eger is also home to the northernmost minaret in Europe. It has also had a cross placed on top of it.
