I love trains, but apparantly I can't sleep very well on them. We were joined for part of our journey by a professor from Italy who had been doing a sabbatical in Barcelona. We had a very labored conversation since my Spanish is extremely rusty. In the morning, we were treated to stunning views as the train went up the coast.
We met up with a young woman named Ya-Ting who was doing a solo backpacking trip and the 4 of us made our way to our hostel. This was definitely the worst hostel I had ever stayed at in terms of quality--but it was $7.50 and very close to the beach so that made up for a lot. It was also locked down during the day which was a bit inconvenient.
We had originally planned to go to Northern Italy, but the train ride would have been much longer and we decided a few days sitting around the beach would be a nice break. So, that's how we spent most of our time in Nice. The beaches are all pebble beaches which are not as comfy as sand, but the water was warm and the weather was perfect.
