A college friend, Linda, had a conference in Barcelona and invited me to join her afterwards to do a little vacation. We were also joined by a high school friend of hers, Pearl.

Headed out on a British Airways flight, leaving Dulles airport at 7:30 pm. At the time I lived about a mile and a half from the metro, and in retrospect I really should have paid for a cab! But I was young and poor and stingy, so I walked it with my enormous backpack and was nice and sweaty for my plane ride.

I was guilted into giving up my window seat so a child and parent could be seated together. This meant I had a middle seat across the Atlantic--very sad. As a thank you, the airline gave me a bottle of champagne. A nice gesture, but it ended up left behind in the dorms we stayed in in Barcelona because I wasn't going to lug it around Europe and no one wanted to drink it.
