We wrapped up two more days in San Pedro with a tour to the Valley
of the Moon to watch the sunset which turns the Andes all sorts of
colors, and a 4 am trip to the Tatio geyser field. We were really
questioning the wisdom of that one as we spent 2 hours jolting along
the bumpiest road we´ve encountered so far this trip only to get off
the bus and discover it was 3 degrees F. But the geyser fields were
great, despite the moronic group of tourists on our bus who couldn´t
follow directions and decided that jumping over the geyser steam vents
was a good course of action. Luckily they managed to avoid being
scalded or breaking through the crust. After the geyser fields we swam
in a thermally heated river and hiked down a river canyon. Once we got
back to town we ended up eating lunch with our tour guide and his
brother who are working to develop more ecotoruism and work
environmental topics into the guided tours. We left San Pedro
and headed to Santiago for a night, before we flew on to Sao Paulo for
another layover. We were in Sao Paulo for less than 12 hours, so it
didn´t make too much of an impression. Then we went on to Foz do
Iguacu, which is right on the Brazil/Argentina/Paraguay border. We
spent a night on ther Brazilian side, mostly taking it easy. There was
a long nap and a very large dinner at a Brazilian staeak house involved. This
morning we enjoyed an overwhelmingly large free breakfast at the hotel
and then hopped on a bus to cross over to the Argentinian side of the
Falls. All went smoothly, and now we´re waiting to get into our room at
our hostel. Unfortunately, the people who were supposed to be checked
out of our room today have had to go off in search of money and the
room is still full of their stuff. So we´re in a bit of limbo until
they get back and pay. The hostel is supposed to have free wifi, but it
doesn´t seem to be working, so I´m making due with the internet kiosk
instead. Hopefully it will be working later and we should be able to
post a good chunk of pictures. If not, they should be up when we get
back to Brazil in 2 days.We probably won´t make it to the Falls
today with the delays with the room, but the hostel has a nice big
pool, and it´s hot (90F), so we´ll just relax for the afternoon and
have the full day there tomorrow.
