We drove the rental car out to Mont St. Michel on the north-west coast of France. Mont St. Michel is an old abbey that sits on a hill with a town around it. When the high tide comes in it is an island (although now connected to the mainland by a road). When the tide goes out it is surrounded by flat sand. We went to the outer wall of the town that evening to watch the tides come in, which they do surprisingly quickly.
The next morning we got a chance to see the Abbey and tour the town before the tour buses arrived. By 10:30 am when we left the town there were over a dozen tour buses parked and more arriving.
