We booked a flight from Lima to Cusco in order to save ourselves the long bus ride up through the moutains.  We still needed to take a bus from Guayquil, Ecuador to Lima, Peru.  Now according to our guide book it was supposed to take 24 hours.  We arrived in Guayquil 2 days before we had to catch the flight only to find out that the bus to Lima was booked out the next day.  We booked instead to Tumbes, the border town in Peru hoping to get a connecting bus there.  When we got to Tumbes we got another bus right away and all looked like it was working out perfectly.  About 3 hours into that bus ride the bus broke down at the side of the highway.  We then spent 2 hours waiting at the side of the highway in the middle of nowhere for another bus to come pick us up.  It was the middle of the night so there wasn´t much we could do.  That wasn´t that bad though, the ride turned to hellish when the replacement bus showed up and it was only one level unlike the two level bus we had been in before.  With a lack of seats my two friends and I were stuck in the aisle of the bus (less than the width of my shoulders apart) for 8 hours until we could get to another stop where we could wait for a later bus and get seats.  If that wasn´t bad enough....not only did we have to stand in the aisle but the entire bus reaked of urine.  So gross.  We arrived in Lima just nine hours prior to our flight so we went straight to the airport and camped out in a hall out of the way until we were able to check in.
