After San Ignacio we took a combination of bus and hitchhiking to get to Hopkins, a small town on the coast of Belize. If you ever wondered what the world would be like if everyone was stoned, just go there. Laid back to the point of incompetance is the way a friend described it.
The next day we took a bus to Placencia in southern Belize. We hoped to get a ferry right away to Honduras but ended up having to wait a couple days. Placencia was beautiful though, very laid back and great beaches.
We took the ferry to Honduras and a bus to La Ceiba, followed the next day by a ferry to the bay islands. We spent 5 nights on Roatan, in the West End. It was fantastic although fairly expensive. I only managed to do one scuba dive, which is what the islands are famous for since I was having trouble with my ears. The dive I did was great though. I saw sea turtles and an underwater field of eels which stick out of the sand, looking almost like grass.
My friends did their scuba certification course there so I just spent lots of time working on my tan. We met a great couple from Oregon on the way to the Bay Islands and we´ve been travelling with them for the last week although we split with them tomorrow. I think we all agree that if we didn´t have flights to catch we would have stayed on the Bay Islands a lot longer.
I´m now in Tegucigalpa (sp?), the capital of Honduras. We´re hoping to get a bus to San Jose tomorrow. 36 hours on a hot sweatly bus....can´t wait.
