Today the group moved from the countryside into the city of Amsterdam.  In the morning, the students were given a very special tour by the Jewish community of the historical Jewish quarter.  Students were given a tour of the 17th century Spanish synagogue, the Jewish Historical Museum, and a deportation center, among other memorial sites.  It was a jam-packed morning of events but well worth the time.

In the afternoon, the students were given an official guided tour of the city and the area.  It was certainly an eye-opening cultural experience as the students learned about the history of the city and the realities of the culture of Amsterdam. Several good discussions took place with students as they asked about some of the laws and customs of the city.

The students also had the chance to visit a cheese farm, see how wooden clogs and cheese is made, and made a photo stop at the Dutch national symbol - the windmill.  After this, the group made its way to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner, and had some structured shopping time afterwards in the middle-class shopping area before the sun went down.

We finished the evening with a very sobering visit to the most famous building in Amsterdam - the Anne Frank House. Arriving at 9pm and silently walking through the house, students were able to learn all about Anne's tragic story and toured the actual house where she and her family hid for several years.  It was very emotional and students were able to put a face to the horrors that we learned about in the morning on our tour of the Jewish Quarter.

Tomorow is our final day on tour, an the students are still going strong.  More updates and pictures to follow!
