Siete Cascadas...The Seven Waterfalls

So it must seem that we are very up to date with this whole blogging thing...I promise we are not on the computer all day long! We are staying at a hostel currently where we can use the internet as much as we want and for free, so I am taking advantage of that in all our down time. We are staying at a great little place called Hotel Anahuac in a little mountain town called Juayua. It is raining as I write, in fact it has been raining most of the day. It is definitely the rainy season in Central America. We went on an amazing hike today through the mountains and through 7 waterfalls. The hike is actually called The Seven Waterfalls. The two of us went with two guides...Mario and his cousin Yesenda, 19 and 13 years old.
They live here in Juayua and often take foreigners on hikes. It is not recommended to go without guides and we would have no idea how to do the hike on our own. It is not like a typical hiking trail that I am used to in the U.S....lots of plant overgrowth, steep slopes with lots of mud (which means it´s hard to avoid sliding despite our best efforts)...and hiking up and down and through waterfalls and the river. It was beautiful. I wish I could have taken more pictures but it was raining a good portion of the hike and I was trying to take care of the camera. We saw some beautiful butterflies and funny little crabs near the river portions. Some spiders and James said a big grasshopper-type bug jumped on the back of my leg and he brushed it off and decided not to tell me because he thought I´d freak out and fall. Very true, he made a good decision on that one! I´m not the biggest lover of creepy crawly things so this was a good challenge for me. We both wore our Teva sandals which we are getting used to wearing (we usually wear flip flops in Southern California) but were so glad we had them today so that we didn´t have to wear tennis shoes and hike in soaking, heavy shoes. We got to go for a swim which felt amazing.
On our way to and from the hike we stopped at Mario and Yesenda´s home. We spoke with another family member for a while and we definitely get the sense that the people here really want to leave a good impression on foreigners so that we will spread the word and more tourists will come. They seem very proud of their country. Oh yes...yesterday I had the most yummy dessert called Atol de Elote (elote being corn). It is thick like a bisque and tastes similar to rice pudding. SO delicious but so sweet too so I could only eat a small amount. The women making it were so excited that we liked it.

Hi guys, I'm just using Chad's login. Your pics are amazing! I had to take down your picture fromthe bathroom door Tristen, I kept thinking it was a bug and getting scared. We miss you lots, but am enjoying living vicariously through you, maybe not the bugs. :-) Cute bungalow you guys stayed in. Can't wait to give you the lowdown on NZ. We made friends with a couple who have a sheep farm. ... show all

James and Tris, just got back into town from camp and just read all the blogs. Thanks for all the updates and pictures, it looks incredible! Hope you are healthy and enjoying each stop. I'm sure it's hard to not get ahead of yourselves and look forward to what's next, but try to enjoy everyday and every moment. Much love, I surfed San O for you this morning, Thrash
