It wasn't too long a journey from Palenque to Campeche, and as our coach turned onto the coastal road leading to the town, we were both happy to look out into the Gulf of Mexico (we haven't seen too much water since we have been in Mexico, and have missed it after seeing so much in New Zealand). As the afternoon was beginning to wane, pelicans returned to their jutting roosts, skimming gracefully over the choppy waters, and fishermen carefully gathered in their nets and busied themselves with the cleaning of their boats.

We were transported by taxi over cobbled streets to our chosen hotel, only to find that it had closed down. Hastily consulting our guidebook, we decided upon another and were conveyed there with an equal measure of pace. Once again, the room did not live up to our expectations, but after all, it was only for one night. We soon unloaded and, being starving, made our way towards the town square in the burgeoning twilight.

We ate our meal on a long arched balcony, overlooking some kind of dance pageant related to the month-long Campeche Carnival. We found it fairly entertaining, and happily donated to the children's cancer charity that the spectacle was in aid of. A brief walk across to the event followed, by way of a 'digestif', before we meandered back to our room, taking in the sights of the pleasantly pastel coloured buildings en route.
