Hello from the unofficial capital of New Zealand! Let us all take a moment of silence for the deceased Ketchup. Ketchup has served me well for the last few months and would always go that extra Kilometer for me. *tear* . Ketchup , I will remember you always. I think of you often , and fill with joy when I remember all of the good times we shared. May you rest in peace in junk yard heaven.
Yes , Ketchups clutch failed and to fix it would have cost $1200 so he just had to go. From the town of Orewa (near Auckland) , I took a bus into the city after having the AA guy tell me that it was hopeless. This made me appreciate Ketchup more than ever because buses are just an impractical way to travel in New Zealand. After arriving in the City Garden Lodge in the Parnell section of Auckland and relaxing with a proper cup of coffee in Starbucks , I was prepared for the final leg of my journey... In New Zealand anyway.
Many people have told me the Auckland is not much of a city and gets really boring after a while. They may be right , but I haven't had any time to think about it because of the heaps of people that I meet here. At my backpacker there were two guys , one of which arrived at Christchurch when I did three months ago. So I spent time with both of them , met Franz (The German guy that I spent the first week with) and now the Stewart Island guys (Eyal and Erez) are in Auckland too! But that's not all. While walking on the main street , twice I heard "Anat??" and it was someone I knew and we would have coffee. How strange being in the other side of the world and hearing your name being called on a busy street.
There are a few observations about this city that should be shared. After changing my ticket at the Lufthansa headquarters , I went by a small square where all of the business people of Auckland were just sitting in the sun having sandwiches. I know it sounds stupid to be shocked by this but from what I remember about working ( especially in high tech ) , if you are sitting in the sun on your lunch break , you might get comments like "Life is good , huh?" or "Don't have much work , do you?". Where as here it is accepted to just take a break in the sun with your colleagues. The truth is that there is no reason to pretend that you are busy on your lunch break when you can be enjoying the short time that you have without unnecessary comments about your work quantities. These are my conclusions - When you have a break , take advantage of it and sit in the sun and also make some time in the middle of the week to lie on a park bench with a book for a couple of hours. I know it sounds simple but people n-e-v-e-r do these things.
This city is also bringing out my weaknesses. There is a Starbucks every five meters on the main street and one right across from my backpacker. I can't explain it but my feet start moving towards the Starbucks every time and you may start to notice and I am gaining weight in my photos. Hopefully , once I arrive in Australia , things will settle down and after the holiday , I can get back to normal. The quantities of Sushi and other Asian food in this city are undescribable. If I didn't know that this was Auckland , I might have mistaken it for Hong Kong or Japan which is very strange.
The only real activity that I did here was go up the sky tower but otherwise , just taking it easy and walking around , suites me just fine. It's time to leave the beautiful country of New Zealand and begin a new adventure. One thing is for sure - I will be here again. I don't know when or with whom but it will happen.
I'm off to see the wizard!!
