(Here's an email we received from Amy early on Monday:)

Hi! I made it! We don't have much time to write, but I did already send a letter to you mom and pop and Jay and Mandy:) Madagascar is really crazy, amazing, hard, beautiful, poor, and NOT that cold! Compared to a Chicago winter, it's more like spring time weather. I am doing well....although the language is hard and not at all like French. One of the national languages is French, so I can communicate ok, but it's hard learning a whole new language. We've only been here 4 days (it's Sunday afternoon here) and all in all I am glad that I came. I am a bit homesick, but that's because our toilet is a hole in the ground! At night we can't go[to the bathroom]out in the dark so we use a little Po (bucket with a lid). You get use to it fast.....because you have to!
My host family is really nice....and they have kids, so I feel ok being silly. There is a mom (Fanza), a bunch of grandkids (Jose, Lukas, Clara, Sarah, Diana, Haingo, Gino, Andry) they are SO cute! We play games and laugh so the time goes fast. The are helping me learn how to cook, clean, and do things for when I am on my own at my site. I can't wait to teach because that's really what I am here to do.
Class hasn't really started yet, so we will see what that is like. So far we've had an overview of what the next 10 weeks will be.....it's all REALLY overwhelming, but I feel like I've made a good choice. The other Peace Corps people are cool....and I've found some friends, but there are still some young ones. This morning we went to a Lutheran church that was really cool. I knew some of the songs (not so much the Malagasy words) and it made me feel really good. They crack me up because they have 3 offerings (makes you think, huh!) where everyone sees your money!!! Those Lutherans sure are smart here!!!
Sorry if this is random......my mind goes so many ways......so I apologize. Part of my brain is working in French, part in Malagasy, part in English! Anyway....feel free to pass this on to everyone else so that they can know how things are. They said that these next 10 weeks of training I won't have as much e-mail as I thought.....but I will try 1 time per week to week and 1/2.Ok, gotta go.....I love you SOOOO much and miss you everyday!!! Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.

I love you always and forever,
Amis :)

Welcome to Madagascar!!!
Hi Amy,

I had Rachel Circle at my house tonight and read your latest blog. Everyone said to say hi and let you know that you are in their prayers!!! We decided it seemed just like yesterday we were at retreat and you were talking about your decision. God's Blessings to you, dear friend! Love, Cathy

miss you!
Hey - i've been reading about your travels. Good luck on this phase of your life - it will be a wonderful experience to touch lives so far away from home, who really need your help and expertise. It is awesome to be an expert at something just becuase you can speak English.

ok - can't wait to hear about all your cultural experiences!
