Ritoque: me encanta!!!
I love Ritoque. Love it. This is where I spent the past two weeks, without internet or television, without big city traffic or crowds of impatient people, away from all the noise and pollution. Ritoque is a remote little beach, the perfect place to get away from it all and forget about everything. I don´t even know where to begin writing about my time spent there. Initially I planned on staying for 6 days... and found it near impossible to leave, which is why I continued extending my stay, and when I did finally say my goodbyes I felt like I was leaving a big part of me there. I feel that I´ve found my new vacation destination... never mind a week in Mexico during the Canadian winter, I'll be heading to the coast of Chile!
I spent my days playing soccer on the beach, lazing in the sun, surfing, body boarding, swimming, playing beach volleyball, and hiking up the rocky hills for picturesque views of the coast and the nearby sand dunes (there is a train track that runs along the sand dunes and if you lay on the dunes while the train passes by it feels like the whole earth is trembling beneath you.) In the mornings nothing felt better than a jog along the beach. Each night we watched the sun set over the ocean, and on the weekends we´de dance and play pool and taca-taca (fusball) and chow down on empanadas at the beach restaurant/bar. The other girls staying at the hostel (none of whom stayed as long as I did... haah) made the experience even better. We cooked absolutely delicious meals from the fresh seafood and produce bought at the farmers market in town: one night Tanja cooked up a delicous seafood fajita feast on the same night of the week that, had I been in Vancouver, a certain 'Taco Tuesday' would have been happening: I toasted to those taco tuesdays that night :)We also had late night bonfires with Chilean vino, and game nights of Charades and Dominos and Yahtzee. There were days with guys staying in the hostel as well, but for the most part it was a female dominated hostel... the way it should be.
All of the surf boys were fantastic! I really got attached to the people who live at the beach and they are a huge part of the reason that I know I will return there one day. In the sand dunes there are tons of rabbits, and one morning I was surprised with a rabbit... Cristian went out with the dogs hunting rabbits and got one for me to try! I even have the tails from the hare and the three rabbits that they caught for 'bueno suerte'. We cooked it up for dinner... muey rico! I've never had someone hunt a rabbit for me before! I am so lucky to have found a place as unique as Ritoque. From the family of pigs walking down the beach, to the two gorgeous Saint Bernards that lived right behind our hostel, to the laid back and super friendly surfer boys, the constant sunshine and the magic of the waves ... Ritoque is a gem of a place.

I love your pics (reply) Mar 9, 2008 21:49 EST by leannee
Wow, this place sounds like Byron Bay in Australia. Wild turkeys running around and you just can't get yourself to leave. I had a fantastic time there, beach life for days, falling in love with everyone there like this is the place your were meant to be. I was only there for 2 days! I'm happy you found your heart there, just like I found my heart in Byron. Perhaps one day we shall return... ... show all
