San Fransisco Day 3 - St Patricks Day Parade
Entry 13 of 45 | show all | print this entry |
Today I went with Beth (Chinese New Yorker) to the St Patricks Day Parade which started on 2nd & Market. It was a nice sunny day and there were quite a few people out. The parade was ok, but not really very active, just groups of music bands and some irish dancers. The San Francisco Fire fighters were also out and they gave me a toy helmet (which I left at the hostel by accident)! I didn't get a picture of them though, which is a shame as they looked like a good bunch. One of the highlights of the parade was a man dressed all in pink Lyra that was riding a unicycle, I think he had missed the gay parade!
Beth left as she had an apartment to look at and I went to the end of the parade at City Hall where everyone was coming together, with stalls, music and food. I watched and Irish band called Cullans Hounds who were pretty good, and had some of the Irish Dancers backing some of their songs. The dancers wigs were so funny, purposefully made so that they bounce up and down when they dance. I do like the Irish Dancing but sometimes it does look a little funny! I wore my new green cardigan to show my support - it also shielded me from the sun.
I then walked back down Market st, past the area of tenderloin (which is where all the gangs hang out) and you really could feel it. The people that were on the street really looked quite scary, but I was safe as this was a man street in the middle of the day. There were also a lot of beggars, and people shouting about Jesus Christ etc but I am learning to ignore them.
I got the Cable car up Powell Street, it was unbelievably packed and you really could not be funny about people being close to you. I was amazed that it actually got up the hill, creaking and groaning as it went. When we started going down hill everyone kind of fell o each other and it was quite funny. It's a good way to see the city, but i do like to walk - my views are not obstructed then.
By this time it was about 4pm and I was getting hungry. I went to Pizza Chicago which is by the beach, had a beautiful Calzone and salad and watched the sun set. It was a great place to watch from as you could see the water, ships and the mountains. At that point i really liked San Fran and was kind of glad I was on my own, I am used to wandering around on my own and find it quite peaceful, there is so much to look at and sometimes I can't make the conversation over that!
Upon return to the hostel there was a Californian Rock band playing so I had a little listen to them and fell asleep after writing in my diary - I think I had been out in the sun too much today - will remember the sun cream tomorrow!
P.s. Today I got an ankle support as my left ankle really is hurting me. I wore it all day and when I took it off my ankle was not hurting, but it is so tight that the middle of my foot hurt instead! P.P.S. I did my first Italian lesson this morning, but can't seem to get my head around it but I will persevere.
