I was a bit annoyed with myself today. I didn't get out of bed until 1pm, but I think I was still trying to catch up on my sleep from the train journey. Today I decided to explore Chinatown and North Beach (Little Italy) which are only round the corner from where I was staying.
I started at the Gates of China Town, and again it is based around shops with gifts to buy and places to eat. I had to stop myself buying a little cotton kimono that was only about 5 quid, but I really don't have room in my bag for these things! I stopped at a Chinese restaurant called Silver something or other, and had a fixed meal of egg roll, soup, pork with rice and noodles. I ate the whole meal with chopsticks and I was quite proud of myself. Walking around it is quite amazing the amount of smells there are, and the amount of people that come together in Portsmouth Square.
I walked through Little Italy (north Beach again) past Washington Square where teams of people were playing football, and up a VERY steep hill to Coit Tower which is a viewing tower of the city. I got to the top and remembered it was a Saturday and the view to go up the Tower was really long, so I didn't wait (the fog hadn't lifted anyway) and descended down the steps on the other side. I stopped counting when I got to 500 steps, and there were way more after that!
I made my way down and Up Lomard St (again, VERY steep hills) to the bit of Lombard St where it is the 'most crookedest street in the world'. 8 sharp hairpin turns in one single block, all going down a very steep hill. It was funny to watch the cars (and bikes) make their way down this hill, also my legs were shaking just trying to get up it!
As it was getting dark I made my way down towards the waterfront (I am always drawn to it) and walked all the way back up to Broadway. Along the way I stopped and watched break dancers, 'living' statues and a school orchestra. I also treated myself to the biggest Fudge Brownie I have ever seen! Hopefully all the walking I am doing will counteract all the food i have been eating.
In the evening Valentina and I just sat and chatted for a while after saying goodbye to Gemma and Chloe who were heading back to Chicago, planning what we would do in San Diego, and Curtis kept ducking in and out every so often.About 10pm I went to bed - how lazy! (Well that's what it's all about?)
P.s. I keep waiting for the 'Big One' that everyone keeps talking about. I keep imagining the walls starting to rock and everyone screaming - maybe it'll happen when I bike over the Golden Gate Bridge!!!
