So today I travelled from Vancouver to Seattle, it took about 4 hours and was quite uneventful, apart from the driver who could not seem to find the clutch and nearly stalled at every single stop. It was the first time I really listened to my iPod and had it on shuffle, so it kept making me laugh when I would hear Frank Sinatra, followed by Queens of the Stone Age, followed by some classical, followed by something else quite random. I like the fact that it chooses the next song for me - I hate making decisions! Listening to the music and watching the world go by ade me really feel like I was travelling - though i am not looking forward to the 24 hr train journey to San Fran! We went across the border and the immigration people asked me loads of questions, they were quite rude actually - and they charged me $6 to enter their country. How rude.
Well Seattle looks similar to Vancouver, though a little hillier and a few more strange people on every corner (one guy turned round towards me and was going to the toilet - I nearly got hit!). The Green Tortoise Hostel is on 2nd Avenue and it is nice and clean, with a common room and a library. Before the free dinner (it's free on Mon, Wed, & Fri with free beer/open mic night on Weds), I went for a walk to get used to the area. Pikes Place Market is just two blocks down (I only know about it from that MTV programme where they used to put loads of people in an apartment - pre Big-Brother times) so I went for a wander round there and looked at the local produce - loads of fish, yuck! Then the waterfront is one road in front of that. A random man told me I had a beautiful smile which made me laugh. I find it easy to find my way around as if I am lost I just take 3 rights and I am nearly where i started!
The free dinner tonight was Mexican, and I must say, it was as good as the Mexican I make. At the hostel people help to make the dinner, and you clear all your own dishes up - plus help with any other clearing if you feel like. I sat with a couple, Deborah and Matt, plus a guy named 'Satan'. Matt is from Northampton so we had a few things in common, and Deborah is from New Zealand, now lives in Oz, but is temporarily working in Seattle. They met over here, and he came back to be with her - ahh how sweet. I also met a couple of girls from Ohio that are also travelling down the coast so I might catch up with them at some point. We sat until about 10.30 drinking some red wine and letting the food settle. I nicknamed Satan 'BoomHower', as he was from Tenessee with quite a thick accent and had hardly any teeth! He has travelled the world and writes poetry, and was actually quite an intelligent person. I have told him if he writes a poem about me for the open mic night on Weds I'll sing a song just for a laugh. It's also Deborah's birthday that night so should be a laugh.
