Today we had what we now consider a sleep in- a 7:30am start. We got ready and for once, had a quite leisurely breakfast. There were no set tours or anything today, but there was a reason behind this; Collingwood plays today. Don't think that just because we are in another country does not mean that we won't watch the football. As China is 3 hours behind Australian time, meant that the game started at around 11am, our time. We caught a train to the transfer station and from there to another station. As it was the weekend, the train was especially squashy. We tried to stick together amongst the chaos, but we lost Craig for awhile.
We went to a place called 'The Rickshaw', a place where all the locals go. We walked in, and as they were expecting us, they were rearranging the furniture around the huge television, which was already on the Australia Network. There was apparently some troubles with the Australia Network before we came, but the boss had some 'connections' and was able to broadcast it.
We were there with Ian Knowles, his girlfriend Judy,
Jack, a Collingwood supporter, Trent, a patient of Dad's since he was a young boy who now lives in China,
and Jane, the dentist who let Dad use her surgery.
We had quite the party. We were all seated on comfy lounges arranged in a U-shape around the TV. The game started, and it was down to business. It was half an hour delayed, so Dad was receiving text messages from the Beets at the game with updates, which everyone teased him about for not having patience.
Collingwood played really well and came out winners over Fremantle by 26 points. It was a great way to start the season, and the day. We hung around for awhile after the game finished, meeting Ian's American friend Gordon and chatting. I spoke to Judy in Chinese and she said that if she closed her eyes, that she would not know that I was a foreigner, my accent and pronunciation was so good.
There was a market across the road which we went to after everyone was finished. The market had many floors, and Jane came with us to help us out bargaining. We bought some more DVDs and split, so the girls could do our own girly shopping and the boys could do whatever they wanted. We didn't get to buy much, as we were getting literally pulled from store to store and chased down the halls when we walked away. It was quite overwhelming. We regrouped as Dad was eager to buy ski jackets.
I already had a ski jacket, so I walked around with Craig and helped him bargain in Chinese. You have no idea how many people asked if he was my boyfriend. We were tired of explaining that we were just friends, so we just told them that we were siblings and their embarrassment was very amusing. We walked outside once we had had enough and said good-bye to Jane. She was great help, and picked out some cute things for us. We took a taxi home, as it was about 6pm by now, and we were so tired. The thought of transferring trains and being suffocated on the train was too much. We went back to the hotel to decide where we were going to eat.
We walked down the road a bit, where we found a little Chinese restaurant. When they saw us, they escorted us right to the very back of the restaurant, in a little private room, even though there were plenty of tables in the main area.
I ordered for everybody and we enjoyed the food. Everyone liked the dumplings the best. One waitress stood at the back of the room the whole time we were eating. I don't know what she was waiting for, or if she was supposed to be watching us, but it was slightly off putting.
We walked home from the restaurant and back to our rooms.
