In China, however, November 11 signifies something which can only be described as the complete opposite to what I'm used to.
It is Single's Day here. With a few festivals dedicated towards love and coupledom, Singles Day was created to celebrate those of us who have not yet found our life partner. It was chosen to happen on this day due to the abundance of one's in the date, and the correlation that the number 1 has with singles.
Many singles eat 4 deep-fried dough sticks shaped like a 1 and a bun shaped like a dot, to represent the 11.11 of the date.
Unsurprisingly, this 'holiday' has been well and truly taken over by commercialism
The slogan I saw on a website for Singles Day was "Let's not be lonely." I don't know how to feel about that, really. Is it motivating and uplifting, or subtly depressing?
It is not really an important holiday by any stretch of the imagination, but it is fun to have a day dedicated to all the singles ladies and men who don't have much to do on Valentine's Day.
