Flag of Uruguay  , Montevideo,
Monday, May 12, 2008

Meet up with Alfonso my long lost mate from Peru who helped me out with the Police and what not when my bag was stolen. Uruguay and Montevideo are his stopping ground. We stayed with his family who own farms and a clothing line. So the family is half half. Meaning half on the farm and half in the city.

Its soo funny here. Everybody carries around a little thermas and a mug to pour there matea (type of tea). Literally they carried it around everywhere.

Montevideo was great with the accompaniment of Alfonso and his family. Alfonso had a heap of his mates come over the first night we where there and had a few drinks. We then headed out less Dad and Gustaf (Cool name Alfonso dad) Montivideo Sights

. It was Bob Marley's death so we celebrated by going to a reggae concert, which was different to say the least. We then headed up town to the nightclubs.
My lasting memory of the nightclubs was how forward the Uruguay men are towards the women. To explain it in real terms sorry to those of you who this offends.....
They walk up and put there arm around a girl or hold there hand and then start talking to them. The girls seem to revel in it. There was five boys two of which disappeared with a girl throughout the night, one which came home with a wad full of phone numbers and Alfonso and I who well I'm spoken for a Alfonso just had no luck despite his best efforts. I have never seen such a thing.....  'We got home at I think about 5am. Great fun good to watch this game.

So Montevideo has a beautiful beach some beautiful architecture and BBQ>

BBQ being emphasized.

Gustaf cooked up lunch traditionally on a coal Barbie out the back of his house where we cracked open a bottle of red from Santa Cruz Chile and enjoyed the different types of meat Montivideo Sights

. Including kidney, glands, intestines and picania (Like rump but better) all from a Vacca (or cow). All the different types of meat where interesting.......

Cooking with Coals rather than Gas is more difficult but allot more satisfying and tasty.

We finished our frangelico, which was a liquor finishing of our lunch at about 4pm. We then had a sleep for an hour and headed out with Veronica Dads friend. Guess what was on the menu. BBQ. The restaurant kept bringing out all this meat. Chicken hearts, some type of blood sausage..... I have never eaten so much meat in my life.

Anyways the next day we headed to Mercado Del Puerto in the main square of Montevideo. I you didn't realise that Uruguayans like BBQ....
This place was an train station which had been converted into a BBQ house. There were hundreds of them with masses of meat. Check the photos.
Thanks again Alfonso - great bloke.
