CouchSurfed with Thomas Humphrey

It was everything you could imagine getting off at a place called Paradise Island; warm weather, clear skies and turquoise water. True, I did arrive to CouchSurf with Tom with puffy panda eyes from all the Lady Loveboat goodbyes, but one scooter ride down to the local bottleshop later and all was cheerful again as we sat at the beach shack sipping G&Ts.

Drinks flowed well into the night as we bar hopped across town. A few too many in fact ending with me paying it back holding one of Tom's friend's hair back into the wee hours of the monring. Poor Franca, she didn't even make it to work on Monday!

Sunday was a true Bahamian experience starting with the breakfast line up for souse (a traditional Bahamian dish similar to a stew) from a local carpark food van. It was an early start to catch the 10am ferry across to Rose Island, but as the live band on-board sung, "Don't worry...'bout a thing...coz every little thing's gonna be alright..."

Far apart from the monstrosity known as Atlantic Resort, an American outpost dominating Paradise Island, Rose Island was how I'd pictured The Bahamas. A rustic island with one small bar and hammocks set overlooking the brilliant turquoise sea. Rose Island was so good that I went back again 2 days later with the crew from the Lady Loveboat on their day off for another epic beach day complete with signature pyramiding (much safer in the water) and hip thrust dance moves on the boat ride home. Turns out that this dancing was well suited to the secretly dirty islander lyrics that Tom had clued me in on. Words like, "blacker the berry, sweeter the juice." Completely inappropriate! I had to laugh watching all the American families back on Paradise Island unwittingly humming and bopping away to such beats.

As I left The Bahamas for Cuba, it really was goodbye to my crew friends, as well as CouchSurfing friend, Tom, who gave me such an awesome local experience. Thanks so much Tom - I never would have had seen the real Bahamas if it wasn't for you. Staying within the walls of Atlantis Resort, American tourists might as well not leave home!
