The power of Facebook brought Anita and I together again - old penfriends that begun writing to each other in 1998 when I was 14 and Anita 15. Originally, Germany wasn't on my itinerary for this trip, but at Anita's invitation I was booked the very next day for a 5 night stay!

All the great things I had heard about Cologne turned out to be completely true - a gorgeous city situated on the Rhine River with it's most famous landmark, the 2 spired gothic Cathedral, visible from absolutely everywhere.

The drizzly weather didn't stop us from getting out and about over the weekend. Anita and Leonardo rallied some friends for a day trip along the Rhine all the way down to Frankfurt - some 200 kms away! We stopped along the way for a look at the historic town of Mainz, sheltering from the rain in the Cathedral and in a lovely restaurant in the Old Town for lunch.

A very late Saturday night out dancing with Bianca in a derilect paper factory to tunes nostalgic of Triple J rendered Sunday virtually useless. In fact, Anita's brother, Michael, arrived to the sight of the 3 of us cuddled up in Anita and Leo's bed watching "The Hangover." How apt!

It was perfect timing for Michael to in town be visiting from Brisbane where he lives and works as a surveyor. While Anita & Leo were back to the working week on Monday, Michael took me for lovely little excursion to Bonn for the day where we went to the Beethoven Museum, devoured German delights such as bratwurst and apple struddle, strolled the river promenade and browsed the shops.

My short, but very sweet stay in Germany ended with the 4 of us heading out to dinner out at a traditional Brauhaus (brewhouse) for a schnitzel and a few glasses of Kolsch, Cologne's speciality beer.

Prost! Thank you so much Anita, Leonardo, Bianca and Michael for a wonderful time in Germany. Looking forward to welcoming you all to Western Australia soon...or just as soon as I rid of all the creepy crawlies Leo!
