Road Trip II: To the end of the World

Remember back in the day when the earth was flat? Well as far as I'm concerned, they had good reason to believe so. Yesterday we decided to rent another car and drive to Fisterra. It used to be considered the western most part of Europe and the end of the world. (Fisterra means the end of land in Gallego). It's breathtaking. So here it is, Saturday in Santiago...What else are we gonna do! Kelsey, Ryan, Kelly, (KU kids) Rory (Irish buddy) and I decided to rent a car and hit the road! It was amazing. The whole northen coast of Galicia is called Costa Muerte, which means the coast of death. It's very dangerous waters, very cold and people often die along the coast trying to harvest percebes. Percebes are barnicles that are supposedly delicous and very very expensive (because they're so dangerous and dificult to get). It's also some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. I can't get over how simple and cheap renting a car is here. We just hopped in (again without a map- my idea) and hit the road and followed what ever signs. We stopped and unknown beaches along the way and picniced in white sand by crystal clear (freezing cold) water. It was amazing. When we finally made it to Fisterra we dangled off the end of the earth looking out as far as we could. Then, as always, I had to touch the water. I had to. Who's hikin' down with me? The boys joined me and it was a decent hike down. The water at the bottom was rough and swirly. Guess what I found when we got there? Percebes! We could be millionares! Well, neither of the guys had a knife so I only got one. Those are tough little boogers! We didn't totally submerge ourselves in the water or we'd probably have died and floated back to America (or Ireland) but we just perched on the rocks and let the white water rush over us. It was amazing. Then we hiked back up to the girls and hit the road again. It felt so good to drive a car again. Rory and I were the only ones who could drive a stick so I got to drive a lot. It was so much fun infact that we decided to go on another trip that night to Lalin. It's just South of Santiago. Shelley's boyfriend was having a BBQ there so we decided, why not, we have a car! It was a great day. We got to see so much of Galicia's coasts and countryside. We live in such a beautiful place when it's sunny out. It's like a whole different place!
