"Avoid treavelling at night and avoid military areas" says our Lonely Planet... Pha... We're young and crazy... let's cross the border between Thailand and Malaysia at 9 pm so Amy can get scared of the loud bangs and men with big guns in the dark.
Kota Bharu was our first Malaysian town. It's right in the north and the difference in culture from country to country after just walking a few yeards across a border still astounds.
Being a Muslim country this feels less like the rest of SE Asia and more like we imagine India will be... but two things remain the same to make us feel safe and happy:
1. Everyone speaks English
2. Bloody good local cuisine
