Incredibly insane and inundating India - Chennai!
Entry 7 of 23 | show all | print this entry |
Oh my gosh! What can I say except... WOW! I am here in India on my second day in Chennai. I have no time to write as I am borrowing my wonderful new friends landline to email this, but I had to say I can't believe I made it.
Thank the lord for my friend Harish's wonderful family who have adopted me from the second I arrive at the airport at midnight. I feel as though my head is so full it could pop and as if i have been in a new world for weeks yet it is only my second day! From my first day meeting his family and playing with their adorable 4 month old who all live together, his mother, father, brother, sister and the baby in a nice 4 room flat with great tiling that keeps it very cool. Not as fancy as home,. but boy does the sense of family just soothe your soul.
His mom has made me amazing idle and rice, with chutneys and milk curd - all safe becasue she boils the water. She took me on a great night tour of the city in an autorickshaw (little moped with cart on back like in Thailand) and we went to MArine beach, longest beach in world, where people were praying under the full moon celbration. AMAZING!!!!! Also, thsi was hit by the tsunami giving it a very interesting feeling to me.
Riding around town in an "auto)" is insane as this makes Bangkok seem like a calm walk in the park! INSANE! I mean, there are bikes, carts with cows here and there in between millions, yes millions of mopeds, auto rickshaws and a few cars. THe game seems to be like that of "Chicken" and I swear, it is sooo scary where i pray for safety with each crazy intersection. The pollution is intense and choking and the poor state of many really shocking.
Today, I was adopted again to a wonderful lunch of dhosa like a rice pancake and ginger samba sauce. So good. Then was taken to the wholesale flower market with two adorable girls of 16 years who are friends of the family. The bus there was intense with crowded people hanginf off sides. But amazing day! Now, I must go back to my hotel and off tos Pondicherry, town built by French about 3 hours by bus from Chennai. I am giving a day tour a shot for first time out as it could help me adjust.
Well, much more soon. Love to all! :)
